There will always be a need for specialists who are supremely talented at creating solutions that fall within a particular domain. However, many of the most important problems today do not fall neatly into single disciplinary buckets that can effectively be addressed with a one-dimensional approach. Solving these will require leaders with the ability to synthesize ideas from multiple domains and apply them in a creative, user-centered and evidence-based way. The School of Industrial Design also offers one of Georgia Tech's most popular minors, and our students are among the highest percentage of those participating in study abroad programs and internships.

This course applied structured design methods to research and exploration of product form and function and introduces concepts of user centered design. Introduction to intermediate visual representation techniques that empower designers of products, services and systems through sketching, model making, computer-assisted drawing, rapid prototyping, and other methods. Introduction to basic visual representation techniques that empower designers of products, services and systems through sketching, model making, computer-assisted drawing, rapid prototyping, and other methods. In our Master of Industrial Design (MID) program, graduate students from diverse backgrounds unite in their shared enthusiasm for creative problem-solving and empathy-driven design.

Introduction to techniques that empower designers to plan and create effective and clear visual communication depicting the interaction and relationships between people, products, and services. This course exposes students to a range of practical methods for research and design exploration to support the design development of interactive products and technologies. Research methods applicable to industrial design including task definition, information gathering, and analysis. The Advance Modeling Concepts Course explores concepts, tools and theories used to model and validate complex forms encountered in the product design process. This course provides an introduction to interactive product design including the basics of sensor technologies, electronics and programming required to produce working product concept prototypes. This course introduces 3D modeling methods for solid and surface modeling in CAD software.

Special topics in history and theory not included in the professional curriculum. Examination of characteristics, production technologies, histories, and environmental impacts of nonrenewable materials used in product design. History and development of industrial design from the beginning of the Industrial Revolution to the present. Foundation course in visual communications theory and practice, continuing the development of two-dimensional visual literacy. Theory and practice in Industrial Design including an introduction to process, methodology, ergonomics, research tools and user research.

Introduction to techniques to help designers build a vocabulary to support effective visual communication including fundamentals of layout, sketching, rendering, schematics, information graphics & storyboarding. Our Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design (BSID) program uniquely melds Georgia Tech's renowned emphasis on scientific rigor with a tradition of expansive, creative conceptual development in design. This blend is further enriched by integration with computer science courses and access to our dedicated teaching and research labs.

The Health and Well-Being track adopts a proactive stance in design research, focusing on universal design and the creation of innovative products and services in wellness and health ecosystems. An interdisciplinary team-based approach to integrate industrial design and engineering competencies in user-centered design development of products and systems with emphasis on humanitarian projects. Under the guidance of a faculty member, students explore a design project that relates to advance theoritical research through a human prespective with a design and/or technology focus on a product. The project may include areas in instructional design, human-computer interaction, learning, neuroscience, perception, product design, user-centered design, and usability. This course explores the application of systematic product design methods to projects that focus on the design of new and/or improved health products, interactions, and delivery of services. An interdisciplinary team-based approach to integrate industrial design and engineering competencies in user-centered design development of products and systems with emphasis on corporate-sponsored projects.

Most faculty members are practicing designers with extensive experience in the field. Each program offers an interdisciplinary course of study with early emphasis on understanding the design process and developing project-based design skills. Students have the opportunity to be involved in sponsored and/or funded projects. Students are encouraged to expand individual disciplinary talents and respond to changing opportunities in the field. The Georgia Tech MID program offers a well-rounded course of study with early emphasis on exercising design principles and developing project-based design skills.
